Animals in captivity

Keeping animals in captivity is big and very controversial problem. At the firs glance it seems to be very bad and inhuman. But if we think for a while about this problem, we will find out that there are some cases and there are some reasons for which keeping animals is essential, sometimes  it makes more positive effects than negative. But in the most people keep animals in captivity for money, pleasure and entertainment – and that is, in my opinion, inhuman.

There are a lot of forms of captivity. People keep animals in zoos, in the scientific laboratories, in the special parks where others can hunt on them, we can also find animals in circus. And there is one more form of captivity connected with animals – in my opinion keeping animals at home is also some kind of captivity.

So first, keeping animals in zoos. I think that it’s not the worst form of captivity because people who work there try to regenerate the natural habitats of different types of animals. Of course it’s not possible to make the ideal conditions for each animal (e.g. there is zoo in Krakow, and it is not possible to make the there natural habitat for bear for Siberia, because there are differences in temperature etc.). There is a question – why people create the zoos? Do we need zoos? It’s quite difficult for me to decide is it right or is it wrong. Personally I don’t need zoos, I’ve been in zoo once, it was Krakow zoo, of course it was quite interesting – but I’ve been there once and I don’ need to go there anymore. But I’m specific person and sometimes I have weird outlooks. If I want to be honest I need to say that children can learn many things in zoo. Of course someone can say that children can find information about animals in books, but seeing animal at zoo, live, is more exiting and children learn faster. But to tell the truth, in my opinion in about 50 or 100 years time people wouldn’t need zoos. Nowadays level of a technology is very high. Scientist and camera operators can make very good films about animals in their natural habitat (how they live, hunt ….etc). In zoo animals are static, they stay in cage – it’s not natural – there is no action – so it’s boring. There is a lot of information about each animal in internet, we can gather photos, films (about natural life of different animals) so we don’t need to go to the zoo and in my opinion it would be more popular than zoo.

So there is one more question about zoo. Is it worth to keep animals in cages? Well, I would say yes and no. No because animals should live in their natural habitats. Yes because sometimes some animals can not live in their natural habitat (there are hurt, or there was a fire in the wood and some animals survived) and the second argument for ‘yes’ is that young people can gather practical knowledge about animals in zoos. So generally I would say that it’s the best form of captivity for animals.

The second plays where we can find animals which are kept in cages are scientific laboratories. It’s the most controversial problem. But firs I would divide it for two parts. First connected with animals which are in laboratories where scientist try to invent new medicines and the second animals which are kept in laboratories where scientist want to make some new products e.g. cosmetics. I can agree with first situation because there are a lot of dangerous diseases for human being so scientists must look for new medicines constantly. And when they invent a new cure, they need to test it on animal first (because that medicine can have bad influence on human being). I don’t agree with second situation. I think that new cosmetics are not so essential for us.

The third place where we can find animals is circus. At the first glance it’s very similar to zoo because people go to circus to see some exotic animals. But there is big difference between zoo and circus. Because in circus animals are forced (are trained) to make some tricks and that tricks are the most important. People go to the circus for entertainment and pleasure, at zoo young man can learn something about animals (where they live, what eat animals etc). That’s why in my opinion it should be prohibited to force animals to play some stupid tricks in circus.

At the beginning I’ve said something about hunting. It’s quite popular. I think that there are some places where people can hunt on animals, which are keeping there only to be a victim. E.g. some artificial ponds where people can fishing.

And the last form of captivity – keeping animals at home. (hehe) Many people wouldn’t agree with me. But I think that 50 meter flat is some kind of cage. Animals like dogs need area for running (… from “animals at home”)

To sum it up. There are a lot of forms of captivity. Some of them are essential, but very often it’s very bad and we shouldn’t let for keeping it.
