Helen Bailey's CELTIC EGG PATTERNTatting Exchange - April 2000Š Helen Bailey
This pattern was adapted and worked by Helen Bailey from a circular motif by Sue Hanson. The pattern for Sue's original motif is available at: Sue's Celtic or or in 'Lace' no 93, page 23.Many thanks to Helen for sharing this with the online tatting class. This pattern is made in three steps: two separate motifs are worked, posted through each other and then a final round is worked to tie it all together.
Original worked in Manuela 20 - mauve 013, yellow 046.With this thread it measures approx 2.5 x 3 inches.
First Section*Ring 5 - 5 + 5 - 5 - 5 - 5Chain 18**Repeat from* to ** 8 more times, joining second picot of ring to fourth picot of previous ring. Join to base of first ring. Cut and tie.
Note: this will come out slightly cupped and does not lay flat. It will be fine when the motif is assembled.
Second SectionNote the slight differences in the chains which are necessary to get the egg shape!*Ring 7 - 7 Chain A 4 + 8 - 4**Repeat from* to ** 4 more times, joining first picots of chains to second picots of previous chains.Ring 7 - 7Chain B 4 + (to second picot of previous chain) 6 - 4Ring 7 - 7Chain C 4 + (to second picot of previous chain) 8 - 6Ring 7 - 7Ring 7 - 7Chain D 6 + (to second picot of previous chain) 8 - 4Ring 7 - 7Chain E 4 + (to second picot of previous chain) 6 + (to first picot on Chain A) 4Join to base of first ring. Cut and tie.
Now lay first section on top of second section and post the "legs" through rings of first section.
Third SectionCommence with right side facing, at point indicated on photograph. Rings are worked under the chains of first section, so fold work out of the way whilst joining.
Ring A 7 + 3 + 7 (joining to picots on Rings from First Section)Chain A 3 - 3 - 3 Lock Join (LJ) to picot of last ring of Second SectionWorking over the top of the egg as follows:*Chain B 6 - 6 - 6 LJ to picot of next ring of Second Section**Repeat from * to ** 2 more timesChain C 3 - 3 - 3Ring B 7 + 3 + 7 (joining to picots on Rings from First Section)Chain D 3 - 3 - 3 LJ (to picot of next ring of Second Section) 3 - 3 - 3#Ring C 12 + 3 + 12 (joining to picots on Rings from First Section)Chain E 4 - 4 - 4 LJ (to picot of next ring of Second Section) 4 - 4 - 4##Repeat from # to ## 3 more timesRing D 12 + 3 + 12 (joining to picots on Rings from First Section)Chain F 3 - 3 - 3 LJ (to picot of next ring of Second Section) 3 - 3 - 3Join to base of first ring.
