I wasrecently looking throughoid issuesof WOOD@magazine, and
read about Kevin I$hl, the Parkersburg,Iowa, farmer who was
planting treeson his 280-acrefarm (issue42, April1991).I'm
wonderinghow big thosetreesaretoday, andif he'sstill planting?

Someof the treesKevin beganplanting in 1986,Robert,are just
beginningto reach4-6" indiameter. Although he cutssomeof those
for thinning purposes,mostof the hardwood treeswill take40-50
years to mature, a gift for the next generation. Until then he continues
to convertmore acresto forest. "There is real satisfactionin seeingthe
land changefrom cattlepasture backto forests,"Kevin saidwhen we
caughtup with him.
In the meantime, small nurserytreesprovidehis bestcashcrop: He
sellshardwoodsfor shadetreesandconifersfor windbreakplantings.
"It's beenfun," he said."You definitely don't makemuchmoney doing
this. You have to loveit." Kevin estimateshe'splanted125,000
seedlingson the farm. He alsoseeded12 acresinlggg with a mixture
of ash,oak, walnut, andsycamoreseeds(28,000per acre), which have
grown into a denseforestof 5-8'trees andundergrowth. Thosesheer
numbers helpward off animalsthateatseedling leavesandkill the
tree. Plantingthousandsof seedsper acre,rather than the 700
seedlings per acrerecommendedby foresters, alsohelpstreesgrow
straighterdue to crowding
