WRITING REVISION FOR EXTENDED MATURA

 

1.      FOR AND AGAINST ESSAY (Opisz wady i zalety...)

- form (4 paragraphs):

§          Intoduction (1, 2 general introductory sentences + TOPIC SENTENCE:

There are both advantages and disadvantages of this issue.

There are both pros and cons.

There are positive and negative aspects of this problem.

There are both supporters and opponents of this issue/idea.)

IT SHOULDN’T BE A QUESTION!!!

§          Arguments for

§          Arguments against

§          Conclusion : must be a paraphrase of what is in the paper, rather general, stating again that there are both positive and negative aspects, difficult to decide

- clues:

1.        use linking words in each paragraph: Moreover, In addition, However, etc.

2.       use commas after each linking expression!!!

3.       each paragraph (2 and 3) containing arguments should have a “small topic sentence” stating if it is a paragraph “for” or “against”

There are numerous arguments for ...

To begin with arguments in favour of ... ,

A large number of supporters of this issue claim that ...

However, there are also numerous arguments against the idea of ...

4.       use formal style (no phrasal verbs, no contractions, only formal register)

5.       divide your paper into clear paragraphs

6.       Don’t write that the topic is a “controversial issue” if it’s NOT!!!

 

2.      OPINION ESSAY (Uzasadnij swoją decyzję...)

- form (4 or 5 paragraphs):

§          Introduction (1,2 general introductory sentences +TOPIC SENTENCE stating your opinion)

As far as I am concerned, ...

In my opinion, ...

§          Argument 1 + example or 1 point of view

§          Argument 2 + example or 2 point of view

§          Argument 3 + example or 3 point of view

From a psychological point of view, ...

What is more, from a educational point of view,... , etc.

§          Contragument

However, it is believed that ....

§          Conclusion: paraphrase the text + repeat your statement (do you agree or not)

Taking all the arguments into consideration, ...

 

- clues:

1.use linking words in each paragraph: Moreover, In addition, Taking everything into consideration, etc.

2. use commas after each linking expression!!!

3.use formal style (no phrasal verbs, no contractions, only formal register, be impersonal)

4.divide your paper into clear paragraphs

 

3.      REVIEW OF A BOOK, FILM, PERFORMANCE, PLAY

-          form (4 paragraphs):

-          ▪Introduction (circumstances of watching or reading, title, type, director, actors, setting)

▪Plot (always use Present Simple when describing it!!!)

Comments on plot, directing, acting effects, soundtrack, close-ups, scenography, costumes, script, plot, writing style, characters building, etc.

▪Recommendation or no recommendation and justification

- clues:

use a lot of descriptive adjectives and nouns connected with theatre, play, film or a book

style must be appropriate to the task (more or less formal)

be careful with punctuation of the titles

4.      DESCRIPTION OF A PERSON, PLACE, OBJECT

-                      form:

PERSON

PLACE

-          introduction (introduce the person, your relation to him/her, age, job, etc.)

-          appearance (according to the task)

-          character + hobbies (according to the task)

-          conclusion

-          introduction (where is it, why you are describing it, what is it)

-          external appearance (according to the task)

-          interior (according to the task)

-          conclusion

 

- clues:

use numerous descriptive adjectives

always read carefully the task and follow it (write the description answering the points in the task)

always follow the rule from general description to details

use words appealing to all senses (sight, hearing, smell, etc.)

remember about “ bogactwo językowe”

5.      STORY

-                      form (4, 5 paragraphs):

-          Introduction (set the scene, who, where, what, when, describe the surroundings, weather, etc.)

-          Events of the story leading to the main event (climax)

-          Events and CLIMAX!!!

-          Conclusion (resolve all the problems, explain, describe your feelings, other people’s emotions, etc.)

-                      clues:

use numerous adjectives, adverbs and words describing sounds, movements, and time expressions (later, next, etc.)

create a mystery appealing to all senses

use correct narrative tenses and remember about “ bogactwo językowe” (inversion: Not only, Never before, etc.)

be careful with punctuation of dialogues ‘I like it’, she exclaimed.
