My involvement in this project has certainly been a labor of love. However, it
may be more appropriate to describe this as having been labor surrounded by love and
support. Because of that there are so many people both in and outside of the University
that must be thanked for their assistance, guidance and support on this project and during
my time here. First, I must thank Richard Hughes for taking a chance on me by taking
me under his wing when things with my previous mentor went south, literally and
figuratively. Richard was kind enough to not only explain to me how life as a doctoral
student would continue but he also offered his services as a mentor and friend and saw
me through this academic mêlée, and for that I am grateful. To my committee members,
Jim Carpenter, Kirsten Namesnik, Riann Palmieri and Susan Brown, your guidance and
your willingness to assist me in this endeavor has been tremendous; I can not thank each
of you enough for your support. To the crew in the lab, Amy Mell, for your technical
assistance and computer programming, Joe Langenderfer and Tom Withrow, for your
endless advice and support, and Laurie Huston for always being that constant, thank you
all, as I could not have done this without you. Special thanks to Brian Downie and Dr.
Barry McDonough for all the injections, Drs. Bruce Miller, Jim Carpenter and
Waldomere Roeser for access to your patient loads, the secretarial staff for your
assistance in patient recruitment and tracking. To the folks in the clinic at MedSport your

camaraderie helped to get me through more than you could have ever known and I am so
incredibly grateful to all of you.
I must thank the Great Lake Athletic Trainers Association for their financial
support on this project. I would like to thank the Division of Kinesiology for bringing me
into the University of Michigan four years ago and allowing me the opportunity to pursue
my doctoral degree here in Ann Arbor – it has certainly been an adventure. To the
Department of Orthopaedics, MedSport, and the Orthopaedic Research Laboratories,
thank you for graciously allowing me to pursue my research endeavors in your facilities
and allowing me to collaborate with your faculty - it has been a tremendous experience.
Now for the people who have truly been behind the scenes during my success. To
the University of Michigan Swimming and Diving Programs, your support during my
four years has been unending and you have been like a family to me, thank you all so
very much. To my friends here at the University of Michigan, I wish we could have
spent more time together, unfortunately my tumultuous time here did not always allow
for much more than an intramural game or a football Saturday. Thank you for your
understanding and friendship. To my friends and colleagues from Gettysburg College,
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and Sacred Heart University, thank you
for your support, your words of encouragement and most importantly your friendship
over all of these years – it has meant more to me than words can ever describe.
To my family and loved ones, you all have very special places within my heart
and it is your support that has been there through it all, all the work, all the trials, all the
long phone calls and even the short ones. Yours has meant the most to me and is truly
immeasurable.
