On 8 October 2008 the United States of America ratified Annex VI of
the International Convention for the prevention of Pollution from Ships
(MARPOL), which triggers a range of requirements for US-flagged
vessels.
Summary
MARPOL Annex VI has been ratified by
the USA.
Issuance of EIAPP certifcate for US-
flagged ships only by the EPA.
This Service Letter describes the requirements which will apply to
all low speed two-stroke MAN B&W diesel engines installed on US-
flagged ships built or converted after 1 January 2000.

IAPP and EIAPP
An International Air Pollution Prevention (IAPP) certificate
must be issued for all vessels larger than 400 gt. For issu-
ance of an IAPP certificate, an Engine International Air Pollu-
tion Prevention (EIAPP) certificate has to be issued for:
TF and Record Book
For the EIAPP certificate to be valid, a NO x Technical File and
a Record Book of Engine Parameters must accompany the
engine at all times. The engine must be operated accord-
ing to the specifications of the Technical File and the survey
method stated in the Technical File. The Record Book must
always be updated with accurate information.
s MAN B&W engines installed on vessels built on or after
1 January 2000
s MAN B&W engines which have undergone major conver-
sion on or after 1 January 2000

The EIAPP certificate documents that the specific engine
meets the international NO x limits specified in Regulation 13
of MARPOL Annex VI.
Frequently Asked Questions about how to obtain an Engine
International Air Pollution Prevention (EIAPP) Certificate
US EPA
EIAPP certificates for all MAN B&W engines on US-flagged
vessels must be issued by the United States’ Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA). According to instructions issued by
the EPA, application for an EIAPP certificate must be made
by the engine manufacturer.

MAN Diesel recommends all owners and operators of MAN
B&W engines installed on board US-flagged ships to contact
the engine builder for information on how to obtain an EIAPP
certificate.
The EIAPP certificate must be issued before the first dry
docking scheduled after 8 January 2009, but no later than
9 January 2012, in order for the vessel IAPP certificate to be
issued on time.
