From the Editor
A few words from our E.I.C.…
perfect job for me because I love sharing new Photoshop techniques and faster ways to do things. I love
writing tutorials, making videos, and teaching live seminars—it’s a blast, and I can’t think of a job I’d like
more. But there’s much more to NAPP than just tutorials and tips. That’s why ive years ago, I asked my “big”
brother Jef Kelby to help where we really needed help, and that was “everything else.”
In the early days of NAPP, we surveyed our members to ind out what they wanted from our associa-
tion. I igured that Photoshop education would be #1 on their list—but I was wrong. Overwhelmingly,
discounts were the #1 thing that the surveyed members wanted: discounts on software, hardware, plug-
ins—discounts on everything. So, Jef’s irst order of business was to negotiate a bunch of discounts for our
members. It took Jef hundreds of calls, emails, and a knack for getting people to work together but within
weeks, member discounts started pouring in and they haven’t stopped since. Now, thanks to Jef’s eforts,
NAPP members get discounts on not only hardware and software, but also on everything from hotel rooms
to rental cars; overnight shipping to ofset printing; magazine subscriptions to stock photos; and just about
everything in between.
Besides negotiating discounts, Jef became the NAPP presence at tradeshows and events where he got
feedback and ideas from members irsthand. He took their input and ran with it, bringing group healthcare
options to our members as well as initiating the NAPP scholarship program and many other programs to help
achieve our goal: to continually raise the value of NAPP, without ever raising the annual membership dues.
Well, after radically transforming our association and providing more of what our members want, Jef is on
to a bold new adventure. He wants to play golf…all the time, every day—golf, golf, golf. He’s decided to retire
and move back to where we were raised, where there’s a preponderance of (you guessed it) golf courses.
In addition to everything Jef has done for NAPP, he’s also an amazing (and incredibly fun) brother, and not
having him in the oice is going to take a lot of getting used to for me. Fortunately, NAPP members will have
an easier transition, as Jef is handing the reins to the perfect man for the job: Larry Becker.
If you’ve ever attended a Photoshop World keynote or Midnight Madness session, you already know
Larry and his creative energy. For those who don’t know Larry (the writer, trainer, photographer, and
entrepreneur), he’s been doing contract work with us for some time and we’ve been trying to get him to
join our team full-time. Now, with Jef’s retirement, Larry’s coming on board as the new NAPP Executive
Director and we couldn’t be more excited. You’ll be hearing from Larry in the magazine, in the Newswire ,
and of course at Photoshop World, but in the meantime, join me in welcoming this man of many talents
to our team (lbecker@photoshopuser.com).
Okay, that’s what’s happening in the home oice. Here in the magazine, our feature story takes an insider’s
look at the tools that four of the industry’s leading digital photographers use and most importantly, why they
use them. So make sure you check it out, starting on page 34.
As we go to press, we’re heading out to Photoshop World Boston and I’m delighted to announce that
we already have record-breaking registrations for our East Coast conference and we’ve broken the record
set earlier this year in Las Vegas for the number of exhibitors. If you didn’t make it to Boston, I hope you’ll
join us for Photoshop World at the Miami Beach Convention Center, March 22–24, 2006, where once again
we’ll bring together the world’s top Photoshop instructors to share with you their latest tips, techniques,
and coolest tricks.
