The Archbishopric of Bremen and the Bishopric of Verden
(which see) were taken by Sweden during the Thirty Years’ War
and joined together as a secular duchy. This action by Sweden was
confirmed as part of the Peace of Westphalia which brought an end
to the war in 1648. The King of Sweden was also entitled as Duke
of Bremen and Verden. Except for a brief period of Danish rule
(1702-04), Sweden continued its rule over the duchy until 1719, at
which time it was transferred to the Electorate of Hannover.

One of the chief cities of Silesia, Breslau is the present day
Wroclaw in Poland, 135 miles (225 kilometers) east of Dresden
and 200 miles (330 kilometers) southwest of Warsaw. The site
was settled in the early 10
th
century and a bishopric was soon
established in close proximity to the town. The bishop was made
a Prince of the Empire in 1290 and he obtained the right to coin
money at the same time. The fortunes of the bishopric closely fol-
lowed those of the city. The portion of territory which came into
the possession of Prussia was secularized in 1810.

CITY
After its founding in the early 10
th
century, Breslau was subject
to Poland until it became the capital of the Duchy of Middle Silesia
in 1163. Duke Heinrich VI gave the already semi-autonomous city
the mint right in 1318. Breslau came under the rule of Bohemia in
1360 and for most of the time up until 1526 maintained some sem-
blance of independence. In that year, all of Bohemia and Silesia
became Habsburg domains, but as a result of a war with Prussia,
Breslau was ceded to the latter in 1741. A city coinage was struck
until about the early 18
th
century, and a Prussian mint operated in
Breslau from about 1750 until the late 19
th
century.
