Chapter One
The news of the day as Ryder Jackson walked into Gracie’s Diner was that Kelly
Montgomery had returned home and was currently at the cemetery. While waiting
impatiently for his coffee, Ryder thought about Kelly. About the gangly teenager she
had been, all wide eyes and smiles. So much had changed since then.
“Mornin’, Sheriff Jackson,” Gracie Macomber greeted as she handed Ryder a
steaming, to-go cup of coffee. She was looking at him with a bit of pity in her eyes but
she never opened her mouth to begin a conversation or dwell on Kelly’s return. Ryder
was grateful Gracie wasn’t the type to push or gossip.
It still felt weird for her to call him Sheriff Jackson when at some point in time
during his childhood, she’d more than likely changed his diapers. “Thanks, Gracie.”
With his cup in hand, Ryder left the diner. He had no desire to get involved in the
speculation of what had really happened on that tragic night so long ago. His memories
were clear about what had happened. He’d spent too many nights awake dwelling on
it, reliving it, to want to hear others do the same.
He drove the two-mile trip up Main Street on his way out of town, looking through
his windshield as people moved along the sidewalk. Small-town life was something
Ryder would never give up. The thought of dealing with traffic on a daily basis made
him shudder. Before he could stop them, his thoughts once again turned to Kelly.
Ryder’s head was pounding, his stomach in turmoil, but most of all, his anger
boiled anew. Memories better left behind nearly blinded him, their intensity was so
strong.
He wanted to rage, to scream, to wring his hands around Kelly’s neck and watch
until her eyes were left blank and lifeless, just as his sister’s had been. Not an overly
violent man, the fierceness of his need to see her suffer almost took him to his knees.
