Something Old, Something New
Chapter One
Matilda Cummings had never been so glad to see the caboose of a
train as she was when she finally reached Dodge City. Her skirts were
littered with burns from the engine’s relentless spewing of sparks and
her hair was misbehaving something fierce. All in all, she knew she must
look a fright. Wearing numerous layers of clothing and the need to act
prim and proper all the time was taxing on one’s body.
Not for the first time since leaving her home in Boston did Matilda
curse her twin sister, Melinda, for getting her into this mess. And yet, if
she was completely honest with herself, she would admit she’d jumped at
the idea of such a grand adventure.
Of course, this was before she’d spent days cramped into the hot
interior of a train car with too many unwashed bodies to count. Matilda
wrinkled her nose at the memory as she soaked her tired and achy bones
in the luxury of a hot bath.
After stepping from the train, Matilda hadn’t been sure she’d actually
be able to find the respectable hotel where her soon-to-be-husband had
made arrangements. And wandering around alone was completely out of
the question. She’d been warned before leaving home of the lawless
behavior found in Dodge City but even her wildest imaginings hadn’t
done the place justice.
She remained on the North side of the railroad tracks just as she’d
been instructed to, and once she’d found a trusting soul to ask
directions, she’d hired a hackney to take her to her lodgings for the
night.
