surname of the suspect.
The research carried out at the University of Leicester it not perfect, but has potential to be a
valid investigative tool alongside other police intelligence. The method developed by the
scientists compares the Y chromosomes of men 1ÈÈÈ... The Y chromosome, found usually
only in men, contains essential generic material that is
passed from father to son
, just like a
surname.
"The evidence would not be hanging on the Y chromosome, all it would give you
3ÈÈÈÈÈ to prioritise a sub-set of your subjects," said co-author Dr Mark Jobling form
the University of Leicester.
Dr Jobling has highlighted this method's limitations, 4ÈÈÈÈ.. in just under half the
population, after the most common surnames, such as Smith , Jones and Taylor, have been
excluded.
For the study, 150 pairs of men who shared the same British surname were selected at
random
. The researchers then went 5ÈÈÈÈ.. The results showed that just under a quarter
of the pairs had recent common ancestry. The researchers found that the method,
6ÈÈÈÈÈ with a 34% chance of prediction in the 80 least common surnames from the
150-name sample.
