FOREWORD
This is an especially favorable time to write a book about
bats because more and more people are becoming
interested in these mammals-and for good reason. Bats
are exceedingly fascinating, very diverse, and extremely
important. Unfortunately, some people unnecessarily fear
bats. Others are not aware of the critical role that bats
perform in nature and of how easily some bat populations
can be des troyed. An increased interest in bats drives a
desire for more information, which leads to a be tter
understanding of bats and an enhanced appreciation of
their importance. With more appreciation comes a greater
commitment to, and involvement in, bat conservation.
I appreciate the help and enthusiasm given by Caroline
Gr eenberg during the ini tiation of this pro ject and the
persisence and patience of Maury Solomon at is completion.
Special thanks to Fiona Reid for the exceptional bat art and
attention to detail. I would like to thank Paul Robertson,
