Welcome to the latest edition of Linux User &
Developer, the UK and America’s favourite high-end
open source and Linux magazine.
We’ve got two super-sized cover features for you
this issue and both tackle areas that affect a large
percentage of us home and business users.
The fi rst is our look at The Document Foundation’s
latest release, LibreOffi ce 4.0. As Michael Reed states in the
intro to his eight-page special (starting on page 42), Linux
is now the most fl exible, powerful and economic way of
deploying offi ce workstations. This being the case, it needs an
offi ce suite that can deliver on this promise and the current
jewel in the crown is LibreOffi ce. As well as revealing its latest
features and a quick-fi re comparison with Microsoft’s Offi ce,
you’ll learn 25 ways you can optimise your workfl ow to make it
even better.
The other pressing matter we cover this issue is dual
booting – specifi cally with Windows 8. If you’ve bought a
computer in the last six months or so it’s very likely to come
bundled with Microsoft’s latest OS, which brings with it
Secure Boot. A quick hop over to page 16 will show you how to
wrangle UEFI and overcome freedom’s latest adversary.

series and is a Linux server admin
for the Raspberry Pi Foundation.
This month Liam shows us how to
write an instant messaging client
and server in Python. You can find

Joey Bernard has been using Linux at home

a computational research
consultant with ACEnet. In this
issue Joey shows you how to set
up your wireless network using
wicd instead of Network Manager
(pages 32-35).
Rory MacDonald is our resident open
source reporter with a keen nose for
a story and a good eye for detail. You
can find his latest stories starting
on page 6, including news of the
BeagleBone Black release (we’re
reviewing it next issue) and the fact
Google has recently released its
code for Google Glass.
Rob Zwetsloot studied aerospace engineering
at university, using Python to
model complex simulations in
class while configuring Linux
HTPCs at home. Among other things
this issue Rob shows us the best

and brings us another code listing
for a classic Python game (page 50).
