BRITISH FOREIGN RELATIONS

 

The United Kingdom is a member of European Union and NATO.

 

EUROPEAN COAL AND STEEL COMMUNITY – EUROPEAN UNION

o        1951 the Treaty of Rome – European Coal and Steel Community appeared

o        first six countries: France, German, Italy, Belgium, The Netherland, Luxemburg

o        established custom union

o        created European Atomic Energy Community

o        1960’s

o        France did not want Britain in Community

o        Britain did not want to be hindered by economic connection with Europe

o       

1969 – Charles de Gaulle resigned

o        1970 – all election programmers favored negotiations for entry

o        1972 – votes in both Houses of Parliament

o        1973 – The UK joined with Denmark and Ireland

o        1993The Treaty of Maastricht

o        the European Union was created

 

1979 – first election to European Union

1985 – Schengen Agreement

2002 – euro appeared – UK not jointed

 

27 states are members of European Union.

 

European Parliament – the UK has 73 members.

 

Strasbourg and Brussel – are places where UE Parliament operated.

 

1974 – nationwide referendum

o        agricultural policy

o        monetary union and common currency

o        uniformity

o        common social policy

 

NORTH ATLANTIC TREATY ORGANIZATION



1949

o        defensive military organization was formed

o        founded as military alliance to counter the potential Soviet threat

o        it purpose was to guarantee freedom and security of members through political and military means

o        UK was one of the founding members

 

Most British military forces are committed to NATO.

o        no compulsory military service

o        professional armed forces + past-time reservists

o        Monarch – commander in chief of the armed forces
