Latissimus Dorsi
Origin
Spinous process of the 7th through 12th
thoracic vertebrae, last three or four ribs,
thoracolumbar fascia, posterior 1/3 of the
external lip of the iliac crest, inferior angle
of the scapula
Insertion
floor of the intertubercular groove of the
humerus
Actions
With the origin fixed, internally (medially)
rotates, adducts, and extends the
glenohumeral joint. Continued action will
assist in scapular depression and
downward rotation and lateral trunk
flexion.
With the insertion fixed, assists in tilting
the pelvis anteriorly and laterally.
Acting bilaterally, assists in spine
extension, and anteriorly tilting the pelvis.
