The marking system, which we are about to disclose, is the same system used by magic shops to
professionally mark Bicycle brand decks. It is a “two-way” system which enables cards to be read from the
top or bottom. Decks marked in this manner often retail for up to $24 or more.
The purpose of this manuscript is to teach responsible adults the proper method of marking their own
decks for magical entertainment purposes only.
How long will it take?
It takes most people about 45 minutes to completely mark a deck of cards.
Is any special equipment required?
No special inks or brushes are required, only a deck
of Bicycle brand cards and an inexpensive X-acto®
knife (with some extra #1 blades)–available from most
any art, hobby or craft store, or ofce supply depot.
NOTE: THESE KNIVES ARE EXTREMELY SHARP–
SO EXERCISE ALL NECESSARY CAUTION WHEN
HANDLING THEM. PROTECTIVE EYE WEAR IS
STRONGLY RECOMMENDED SINCE THE BLADE
TIPS CAN BREAK OFF AND POSE A SERIOUS
EYE HAZARD.
Can anyone do it?
Any adult with normal eyesight and a reasonably steady hand will have no difculty marking a deck of
cards using this system.
How does the system work?
Using the X-acto® knife, the surface ink of a card is lightly scratched away (to expose the white) in
specic areas of the symmetrical ower petal patterns on the backs of the cards. There are four of
these patterns on each card. The pattern on the top left is used to indicate the value of the card: Ace
through King. We shall refer to this as Side A. The pattern on the top right is used to tell the suit:
Clubs, Hearts, Diamonds or Spades. We shall call this, Side B. Cards are marked in the same manner
on both the top and bottom.
Side A = Value Side B = Suit
Work set-up for the rst phase
There are two distinct phases to marking a deck. In the rst phase, you mark the values. In the second,
you mark the suits. When you’re ready to get started, separate the deck into like values (the four aces, the
four twos, the four threes, etc.). We’ll now take you step-by-step through the marking the value of each
card (top left - side A) beginning with the Ace.

Value: Ace
Lightly scratch away the ink, so
the outer portion of the top petal,
at 12:00 if you will, is extended in
a line to meet the outer line above
it. Remember we’re only working
with the left pattern–Side A. Mark
all four Aces in this manner on
both ends.
Note: This is the same mark you
will later use on the opposite side
(B) to denote a “Heart.”
Tip: Work with the card upright–
after marking the tops, turn the
cards end for end and mark the
other half of the card.
Value: Two
Two is the only value NOT marked. Of course, the suits
are marked. But we’ll get to that later. So go ahead and
set the four Twos aside for the moment.

Scratch off a white line between the petal (at 9:00) and the inner
circle, as shown. The clock analogy works well enough, but it is not
perfect–since there are only eight petals. Note: The Seven through
Ace high cards extend the outer portion of the petal, while the Three
through Six use the area between the inner circle and inside part
of petal.
