Addressing an audience of 100
parliamentarians and 150 senior
industry leaders, civil servants and
journalists, Bill Bolsover, the
chairman of the Construction
Products Association, said that
the construction industry has a
vital role to play in helping achieve
economic recovery.
He commented: ‘Despite the
current economic pressures and
the difficult decisions that will be
taken by Government over the
coming weeks, spending cuts and
tax increases alone will not revive
the economy. These must be
coupled with private sector growth
to generate economic activity,
create employment and nurture
the fragile economic recovery and
more than any other industry,
construction is an essential
element for this economic growth.
He continued: ‘We build the
energy facilities and storage
capacity that will ensure industry
can continue to operate efficiently
in the UK; we deliver the transport
infrastructure that helps make
businesses more competitive; and
we are key to ensuring we achieve
our carbon reduction
commitments through the new
buildings we create in the future,
and through the improvements
that are made to the energy
efficiency of the existing building
stock.”
UBM Live has announced the
launch of kbb London which will
take place from 15-17 May 2011
at Excel.
The runaway success of kbb
Birmingham in March, and in-depth
consultation with the marketplace, has
determined an unquestionable need and
desire for a kitchen and bathroom show
in the capital next year.
The show will target both the retail
and contract audience and will
showcase the latest products and
services from leading manufacturers
in the kitchen, bathroom and tiling
markets.
kbb sales director, Sam Cande
commented: “kbb Birmingham was an
excellent indicator that this market is
regaining confidence after the last
couple of difficult years. The launch of
kbb London will give manufacturers the
opportunity to display their products at
a national event, with a key focus on the
London and southern markets, offering
a distinctive platform for the industry in
its entirety.
“A natural extension to the successful
kbb Birmingham exhibition, kbb London
will be targeting companies from across
the market to ensure a diverse range of
products for this exciting new exhibition.
The initial response prior to the
official launch is very encouraging
and underlines the faith the industry
has in our company to deliver a great
exhibition.”
The RIBA in the South West and Wales is holding a free sandcastle
competition on Saturday 24 July at Barry Island’s blue flag beach.
The competition which is open to families and friends, is a joint event
between Design Circle RSAW South Branch (Royal Society of Architects in
Wales) and the RIBA Bristol & Bath Branch (RIBA South West).
The competition kicks off at 13.00 and judging takes place at 17.00 by a
mixed panel of judges, with prizes being awarded shortly afterwards in the
following categories: tallest sand structure, most technically daring, best
overall scheme, and people’s choice.
Teams should consist of up to six members and children (under the
supervision of their parents) are more than welcome to take part. Teams
should provide their own equipment; bucket and spades, or any other tools
that are to be used (note, motorised diggers are not allowed). Framework
is allowed, however all supporting structures must be removed for judging
and teams may decorate their structure with flotsam and jetsam found on
the beach. The judges’ decision will be final!
Once-in-a-lifetime opportunity
A fond farewell
Global building products manufacturer, Sika, is offering engineering and
architecture students once-in-a-lifetime work experience opportunities at top
locations around the world as part of an initiative to provide them with a real
hands-on glimpse of their future careers.
The Sika Experience competition features six key themes – Resources,
Mobility, Wind, Water, Climate and Solar – underlining the company’s position
as a diverse and innovative company at the forefront of modern construction.
After answering a range of questions and giving their details, entrants are
placed in a prize draw – with Sika donating $25 to sustainable projects for every
serious application received. The winning candidates go on a specially tailored
two-week work experience programme aimed at sharpening their knowledge
in the category they have applied for.
The Resources and Mobility categories have already taken place, with the
winning students – drawn from across the globe, including New Zealand,
Romania, Italy, Thailand and China – visiting Switzerland to see Sika’s
production centres first hand and chatting to the company’s technicians before
touring some of the top engineering spots in Europe including Paris, London
and Munich.
N&C Nicobond has sadly announced that the
inventor of ready mixed tile adhesive, Eric Leigh
recently passed away. In 1958, Nicholls and
Clarke developed and marketed the very first
Nicobond Tile Cement. This was the first ready
mix emulsion based tile adhesive, introducing
innovation to the world market and drastically
changing the construction industry as we know
it today.
Award shortlist announced
The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) has announced the release
of this year’s shortlist for the 350 Award, a celebration of architecture
projects under £350,000; the winner of which will be given a People’s
Choice Award.
The 350 Award is the centre piece of the RIBA’s Architecture Festival
2010, which is the very first of its kind for the North West.
OMI Architects has been nominated for The Bridge of Discovery, for
Creswell Crags Museum & Heritage Centre in Nottinghamshire. Aidan
Simpson Architect has been nominated for a private commission, built
in Mereclough near Burnley. Liverpool based architect Studio Three
has been nominated for its design for the St Anselm’s College Food
Hub in Birkenhead, Wirral. Honey Architects, based in Barrow in Cumbria,
has been nominated for its design of the Fisherman’s Bridge in The
Lake District National Park. The bridge was completed on a tiny budget
of £18k. Harrison Pitt Architects has been nominated for its extension
to a private house that was originally a stable block in Lancaster, and
Stanton Andrews Architects, based in Clitheroe in Lancashire, has been
nominated for the 350 Award for its renovation of a 1980’s estate house
in Bolton.
Sustainable science
The Exeter Science Park project infrastructure team was presented with
a CEEQUAL Excellent Client & Outline Design Award at the ICE South West
Annual Dinner on 4 June 2010. The award was presented by Richard Coackley,
vice president of the Institution of Civil Engineers.
The project is also being assessed as a Whole Project Award under the
CEEQUAL scheme, and achieved an 86% score in the Interim Client & Outline
Design stage of the assessment.
CEEQUAL is the assessment and awards scheme for improving sustainability
in civil engineering and public realm projects.

RIBA London, alongside Design for London and Qatari
Diar, has announced the winners of its Forgotten
Spaces competition.
The top three prize winners from a shortlist of
20 were: 1st Prize – Reservoir Roofs by Gort Scott
(Waltham Forest N17 9NH); 2nd Prize – The Pool
by Scott Brownrigg (Camden WC1); 3rd Prize –
Thames Archipelago by Craft Pegg (Tower
Hamlets E14 9QS).
ISG Jackson Special Projects has skated off with a £1.2m
contract to refurbish and upgrade facilities at the popular
Riverside Ice & Leisure Centre in Chelmsford, Essex.
The fast-track project has been timed to coincide with the
low season at the centre and sees the contractor carrying
out a raft of improvement works at the ice rink.
Work started on 7 June and will take around nine weeks
to complete. ISG Jackson Special Projects will carry out
essential repairs to the concrete base of the ice rink, re-
paint the deck and renew the stainless steel perimeter
barrier. A key element of the scheme involves the
replacement of the ageing mechanical and electrical
systems that keep the rink frozen.
Victoria Tube station, one of the
busiest and most congested on the
network, is set for a radical £700m
transformation as TfL announced
that a contract has been awarded for
its redevelopment.
As part of TfL’s multi-billion pound
Investment Programme to improve
and expand the transport network,
the VINCI BAM Nuttall joint venture
will reconfigure Victoria station –
creating a brand new ticket hall,
doubling the size of the existing
southern ticket hall, and installing
new entrances, nine new escalators
and step-free access.
The station redevelopment is
essential to supporting the upgrade
of the Victoria line and the two
together will result in quicker, easier,
and less congested journeys for
thousands of Londoners. Between
now and 2018 TfL will upgrade eight
Tube lines, build Crossrail, and
expand the DLR and London
Overground networks, as well
as delivering other major
improvements. Such investment is
vital to the future growth, prosperity
and the competitiveness of London
and the UK, particularly to creating
new jobs and opportunities.
Boris Johnson, the Mayor of
London, said: "Anyone that's
ever been near Victoria Tube in
the rush hour will know that these
improvements cannot be made
soon enough.”

£1,000 prize up for grabs
4D training
The £8.7m ACT-UK Simulation Centre has recently
opened in Coventry as the UK’s first virtual reality
training facility for the construction industry.
The Centre, which is only the second of its kind in
the world, will enable construction site managers to
be trained as though on a real site, using pioneering
technology. A 12m panoramic screen recreates a wide
variety of scenarios, meaning trainees could be
virtually on-site at anything from a small, rural
affordable housing scheme, to an inner-city high-rise
office development. The Centre sets a new standard
for leadership and management training in the
industry.
A talented Diploma in Construction and the Built
Environment (C&BE) student will be rewarded with a
£1,000 prize for their hard work and achievements at this
year’s Construction Manager of the Year Awards.
The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) will present
the special award to an exceptional C&BE Level 3 Diploma
student who has achieved an overall grade B to A* and a
good profile of grades for their Principle Learning and
Project modules. As keen supporters of the Diploma, the
CIOB is offering the cash prize to motivate and encourage
young people to take up careers in the built environment.
Bridget Boreham, the CIOB’s chief operating officer,
said: “We are delighted to support the Diploma and reward
the student who has achieved the strongest profile each
year. The Diploma places the built environment at the
heart of mainstream secondary education and a whole
generation will now see opportunities for careers that,
until now, they were hardly aware of.
“Too often the brightest pupils in schools are not aware
of the positive difference this industry makes to people’s
lives and the environment around us. It is in everyone’s
interest to make sure young people get the skills they
need to succeed, whether they decide to go into a job with
training or continue studying at college or university.”
Award-winning observation
By winning the Merit Award of the Society for Environmental Graphic Design (SEGD), the Indemann Observation Tower has demonstrated its brilliance on an
international stage. The 36m (118ft) high accessible steel sculpture, which resembles a primitive robot, was erected in the autumn of 2009 on a brown coal
waste tip in Inden/Germany as a symbol of the structural evolution of this former mining region. While the size and shape of the Indemann is impressive, it
is its semitransparent skin of stainless steel mesh with integrated LED profiles that attracts thousands of visitors every week. At night a spectacular
computer-controlled light show brings the steel colossus to life. The platform for this spectacle is the Illumesh system, a co-operative development of
GKD – Gebr. Kufferath AG, Düren, and ag4 media facade GmbH, Cologne. The global patent is held jointly by the two companies. The SEGD Design Award
celebrates outstanding creations in the fields of environmental graphic design and was presented on June 5 in Washington, D.C.
The 270-tonne steel sculpture was designed by the Maastricht-based Maurer United Architects, and with its three viewing platforms, is an internationally
admired industrial monument. The Indemann Observation Tower impressed the multidisciplinary expert jury in the USA in all aspects. Special praise was
given to the metallic surface, which, with more than 40,000 interwoven LEDs, each one separately controlled by computer, makes the Indemann a
shimmering night-time focal point for the region. During the day the reflectivity of the woven stainless steel skin blends the starkly geometrical silhouette
into the surrounding landscape.
