Upon hearing the words “Santa Cruz,” some lapse into reveries of
surf pounded shorelines and the bark of seals at the wharf. Others
might think of sunlight fi ltering through a distant redwood canopy.
Tendrils of fog rolling across artichoke fi elds. Panhandlers downtown.
Skateboards. Rickety wooden rollercoasters. The worst place to
commute to or from, ever.
For us, Santa Cruz is not only where this company is based, it’s
where we live, and it’s where we ride. From the sandstone bluffs at
the north end of the county, to the redwood duff trails at the south
end and all the poison oak laced, not quite secret enough places
in between, these trails are our home. There are far more practical
and economically sensible locations for a bike company, places more
conducive to business, towns with something like a realistic cost of
living, but we’re happy right where we are, in this old cannery building
four blocks from the beach. We wouldn’t trade it for the world.

There are no posters hanging from offi ce walls here showing majestic scenery and preaching inspirational phrases about success or
passion. There isn’t a dress code either. Sometimes the refrigerator in the break room gets downright scary. The building could use a coat
of paint. We are blessed, however, with a growing family of employees who care about building bikes the right way.
That means intensive design reviews and careful product development. It means rigorous quality control, innovative product specifi cation,
and close attention to every aspect of manufacture from tubing selection to wheel building to box design.
Before any Santa Cruz bike ever sees the light of day, we ask the following questions: Will it be fun to ride? Will it still be fun to ride fi ve
years from now? Will it be reliable? Will it be easily serviceable? Will it be easy to repair, and will the parts be easy to fi nd? Only when
we can answer “yes” to those questions will we decide to build that bike.
We perform all our prototype fabrication in-house at Santa Cruz Bicycles, allowing us to rapidly develop and test new designs. A
comprehensive test lab, fi lled with machinery designed to precisely destroy a bike in every imaginable way, lurks in its own corner behind
the fabrication department. The information gleaned here is added to the real-world data collected from an extensive collaboration of
riders, and is used to shape and refi ne every one of the bikes seen in this catalog.

SanTa crUZ’S PaTEnTED VirTUaL PiVOT POinT SUSPEnSiOn
iF VPP iS SO awESOME, whY DO wE STiLL MaKE SingLE PiVOT BiKES?
Featuring counter-rotating links guiding the rear suspension through its travel, VPP gives us the freedom to manipulate shock rates and
suspension behavior in a variety of ways that are unique to this design. Without getting into patent explanations, we can build short travel
XC bikes that eat up bumps usually associated with bigger bikes, and long travel gravity bikes that pedal as if they were smaller and
lighter than they really are.
The links themselves are short and stiff. In our latest evolution of the design, they pivot on large diameter axles that bolt directly into the
frame. Using these links and their associated hardware improves chassis rigidity and allows for multi-link frames that are twist and fl ex-
free, enhancing handling and increasing reliability. These are good things that are often overlooked in the sea of techno-BS that most
suspension discussions fl oat around in.
Santa Cruz single pivot bikes are incredibly reliable, easy to service when they eventually do need it, and offer a blend of performance
and uncluttered simplicity that is hard to match. The same attention to detail goes into each of our single pivot bikes as does our VPP
bikes, with the exception that there are fewer moving parts to deal with on the single pivot. You could argue that a single pivot is a less
sophisticated suspension than a multi-link design, but that would be failing to realize that a good bike is more than the sum of its parts.
Suspension design is only one slice of the complete pie – frame material, handling characteristics, ergonomics, execution of design, and
choice of suspension components all play roles in this whole package.
In the case of our single pivots, the whole package equates to fi nely balanced, responsive handling bikes that offer boutique performance
at very competitive prices.
