pattern A and B

Worked on a multiple of 8 plus 2 sts.

start at 23 cm with pattern B

BACK:

1.  Cast on 164 sts on size 3 needles.  Work in K1P1 ribbing for 7,0 cms.  Inc 14 sts evenly across the row to 178 sts total. 

2.  Change to size 4 needles and pattern A.  AT 23 CM’S CHANGE TO PATTERN B.

Work even until piece measures 29,5 cms (124 rows), excluding hem. 

3.  Mark this row at both ends for armhole.  Continue until armhole measures 22,4 cms (94 rows),

4.  Shape neck.  Work both sides at the same time.  Work 65 sts.  Slip the next 48 sts to a holder.  With a second ball of yarn, work remaining 65 sts.  Dec 1 st at neck edge every row 5 times, until 60 sts remain. 

5.  Work even until armhole measures 23,8 cms (100 rows).  Cast off 60 shoulder sts loosely. 

FRONT: Cardigan right side worked first.

1.  Cast on 79 sts on size 3 needles.  Work in K1P1 ribbing for 7,0 cms.  Inc 11 sts evenly across the row to 90 sts total. 

2 Change to size 4 needles and pattern A.  AT 23 CM’S CHANGE TO PATTERN B.

Work even until piece measures 29,0 cms (122 rows), excluding hem. 

3.  Shape neck.  Dec 1 st at neck edge (right end) of next row, then every 3rd row 17 times, then every 4th row 12 times.

4.  Armhole.  (Work measures 29,5 cms from hem).  Mark this row at left end for armhole.  Complete neckline shaping until 60 sts remain.

5.  Work even until armhole measures 23,8 cms (100 rows).  Cast off 60 shoulder sts loosely.

6.  Left cardigan front.  Work as for right side, reversing shapings.

SLEEVES: pattern A only.

1.  Cast on 65 sts on size 3 needles.  Work in K1P1 ribbing for 6,0 cms.  Inc 9 sts evenly across the row to 74 sts total. 

2.  Change to size 4 needles and pattern A. 

3.  Inc 1 st at each end of every 3rd row 11 times, then every 4th row 30 times to 156 sts (153 rows total, excluding hem). 

4.  Work even until sleeve measures 37,0 cms (156 rows), excluding hem. 

5.  Cast off loosely. 

SHOULDER SEAMS:

1.  Sew fronts to back along shoulder seams. 

V FRONT NECK SHAWL COLLAR:

---  by hand on size 4 circular needles. 

Warning.  Front band and collar styles do not match. 

1.  With right side of work facing, pick up and work 84 sts from right front neck edge, 5 sts from right back neck edge, 48 sts from back neck holder, 5 sts from left back neck edge, 84 sts from left front neck edge.  Total 226 sts. 

Decrease from 226 to 194 by: P 4  P2tog *(P 5 P2tog)* 31 times P 3

      MOSS ST PATTERN.  (Even number of sts). 

         Row 1:  *K1 P1*, repeat to end.

         Row 2: *P1 K1*, repeat to end.  Repeat these two rows.

2.  Break yarn.  With the right side of garment facing, slip the first 62 sts of the right neckline onto the right needle. 

Join the yarn and work the next 70 sts in pattern across the back neckline.  *(Turn the work.  Work in pattern across the previous row, then a further 2 sts.)* twice.  Repeat from * to * increasing 1 st, so adding 3 sts at the end of the row 40 times, until all neckline sts are being worked. 

3.  Work even until back of collar measures 14,0 cms (60 rows).  Cast off loosely in pattern. 

4.  Finishing.  When the button bands have been attached, sew the collar ends to the top of the button bands. 

BUTTON BAND:

1.  Cast on 13 sts on size 3 needles.  Work in K1P1 ribbing for 36,0 cms.

2.  Check that this length is sufficient, when slightly stretched, to go up cardigan front, from bottom of front hem to bottom of V-neck shaping.  Rib more if necessary.

3.  Cast off.  Sew button band to left front for girls/women, right front for boys/men.

4.  Mark positions for 5 buttons, the first one 1,3 cms above the band bottom, the last one where the V-neck shaping begins.  The rest should be evenly spaced between these two, approximately 8,7 cms apart.

BUTTONHOLE BAND:

1.  Work buttonhole band as for button band, working buttonholes at the marked positions as follows:

       With the right side of work facing, rib 5 sts, cast off next 2 st, rib to end.

       Next row.  Rib 6 sts, cast on 2 st over cast off st(s), rib to end.

2.  Sew buttons at marked positions on the button band.

3.  Sew buttonhole band to cardigan front, being careful to align buttonholes with buttons.

FINISHING:

1.  Sew sleeve top to armhole, easing to fit.  Sew side and sleeve seams using invisible seam.  Sew any remaining seams. 

2.  Darn/weave/sew in all loose ends.
