Saxby Pridmore
is a part-time Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Tasmania, Austra-
lia, and has a private practice in general and forensic psychiatry. He commenced his profes-
sional life as a physical therapist, but retrained in medicine. He has a research degree in neu-
rology, and has specialist qualifications in psychiatry, public health, addiction medicine and
pain medicine.
Saxby has performed pioneering research in Huntington’s disease and transcranial magnetic
stimulation, and has authored novels, medical textbooks, chapters and refereed papers. He is
married and has two children. His recreation is poetry, he has over two hundred poems in lit-
erary magazines and anthologies. He has been a keen supporter of the German Journal of Psy-
chiatry since inception.
Madness of Psychiatry
is a book for the general reader, which will interest psychiatrists and
students. It is written by a psychiatrist with extensive academic, administrative, and clinical
experience. It is illustrated with case studies and photographs. It describes the symptoms and
syndromes of the severe mental disorders. It explains aspects of mental illness in court, and
compulsory admission to hospital. It salutes electroconvulsive therapy and tentatively wel-
comes transcranial magnetic therapy. It grapples with deinstitutionalization, genius and sui-
cide, and turns a critical eye on post trauma debriefing and recovered memory.
