Materials You Will Need:
2 yards of a geometric print
2 yards of muslin, if desired for lining
7” Black zipper
Clip & “D” Ring for front top flap
(12) 5/8” Grommets
(2) Snaps (or Velcro) for pocket flap, if desired
Strap material
(2) 1 ½” “D” Rings to attach adjustable shoulder straps
(2) Vest Buckles to adjust straps
Cutting Directions:
From the geometric print, cut:
(1) 17-1/2” x 11“ piece - front top (A)
(1) 17-1/2” x 10-1/2“ piece - front bottom (B)
(2) 7-1/2” x 4“ pieces - front pocket flap (C) **round the front corners for a nicer design
(1) 7” x 6“ piece - front pocket, center (D)
(1) 7” x 7-1/2“ piece - second pocket (D2)
(2) 2-1/2” x 7-1/2“ pieces - front pocket, sides (E)
(2) 2” x 1-1/2“ pieces - zipper ends (G)
(1) 2” x 24“ strip - pocket side (H)
(4) 2” x 3-1/2“ - tab for ring (I)
(1) 5” square, folded in half diagonally twice - strap holder (J)
(1) 20-1/2“ x 17-1/2” piece - back (K) **round the front corners for a nicer design
(2) 9-1/2“ squares - top flap (L) **rounded on front corners and angled toward the top
so that the top is 7” across when finished
(1) 14“ x 6-1/2” piece - bottom (M) **round the front corners for a nicer design
Sewing Directions:
(Seam allowance is 1/2” and finished. To create a lining, cut muslin for all of the
pieces and pin onto the backside of the fabric and sew into the seam.)
To Make a Double Pocket in the Front:
Place (c) Front Pocket Flaps right side together, sew three sides, leaving the top open to turn. This will be closed
in the pocket seam. turn and top stitch.
Fold under ¼” twice, and iron, then top stitch the top (7”) of the Front Pocket Center (D). Place the wrong side
of Front Pocket Center (D) on right side of second pocket (D2), matching the pieces at the bottom and sides.
Pin & sew along the bottom and sides.
Sew Front Pocket Sides (E) to each side of the front pocket.
Pin flap (C) to the top of the pocket (D2). With right sides together, pin the Pocket Facing (F) on top and sew
through all layers. Press facing toward the seam. Fold over the seam and top stitch.
Sew Zipper ends (G) onto each end of the zipper. Sew the pocket to one side of the zipper.
Sew Pocket Sides (H) to each side of the pocket. Center the pocket unit to the Front Bottom (B) and stitch around
the sides and bottom. (do not lay the sides out flat—they will make the pocket stand out from the backpack.).
Fold Tab for Ring (I) in half lengthwise, right sides together, and sew. Turn. (make 4. Use only 1 on this step). Fold
this Tab over a small “D” ring and sew close to the ring. Pin the raw ends to the top center of the pocket.
Make a pleat in the pocket sides at the top so that the pocket will have depth. Top stitch. Sew the pocket to the
Front Bottom (B) along the top of the pocket.
Make the Bag:
Sew Top Front (A) to Bottom Front (B).
Fold a Tab (I) over a 1 ½” D- ring and sew close to the ring. Fold the Strap Holder (J) in half diagonally twice.
Insert the Tab and D-ring into the fold. Stitch across the fold and then stitch an “X” in a square to reinforce.
(make 2) Sew one of these units to each side of the front about 3” up from the bottom of the bag.
Sew the front to the back (K) along the side seams. Pin and sew bottom (M) to the bag.
Fold over the top of the bag ½. Press and top stitch. Fold over 2” and sew.
To make holes for the drawstring. insert Grommets 4” apart around the top. For the drawstring use a thick string
about 2 ½ feet long. Weave in and out of the grommets. Tie knots on each string at the end to keep from
unraveling, and tie the ends together, 3” from the end.
Fold Tab for Ring (I) over the clip and stitch to secure. Pin to the center front (rounded edge) of Top Flap (L), with
raw edges together. With right sides together, sew Top Flap (L) pieces together, leaving an opening to turn. Trim
and turn. Stitch opening. Top stitch.
Pin and sew 3” down from the top center of the back, with the flap extending up from the backpack. Sew onto
the back securely.
Straps:
From the strap material cut the following pieces:

11”
(2)
33”
Burn the ends slightly with a match to keep from fraying.
Stitch each end of the 11” piece to the bag on the top flap (where it is attached to the back) for a hanging loop.
Stitch an “X” in a square to reinforce each end.
Attach vest buckles to one end of each 33” piece. Reinforce. Thread the other strap end through the D-rings on
the side of the bag, then up through the buckle, and attach to the top of the bag beside the hanging loop.
Reinforce.
