A VisiT To irelANd

Type of activity: group, individual and pair work
Focus: vocabulary connected with the culture and
geography of Ireland; phrases to express likes;
reading, listening and speaking skills
level: elementary – pre-intermediate
Time: 30 minutes
Preparation: Make a copy of Student’s Worksheet
for each student.
5. In pairs, students complete Activity 2. They test
each other on how much they remember about
the tourist attractions from Activity 1. Student A
covers the texts and recalls everything he/she
remembers about attractions a-c. Student B
checks the answers in the texts. Then they change
roles. Student B says what he/she remembers
about attractions d-f. Student A checks the
answers. Alternatively, both students can cover
the texts, together recall everything they
remember about the attractions and then check
in the texts.
6. In Activity 3, students choose three of the
attractions they would like to visit in Ireland and
secretly write them down in their notebooks. In
pairs, students try to guess which three attractions
their classmate has chosen.
7. Go through the phrases for expressing likes in
Activity 1 with the whole class. Ask volunteers to
make their own sentences with each phrase. In
the same pairs as before, students then use the
phrases to explain their choices of the
attractions.
Procedure:
1. Explain that St. Patrick’s Day is an Irish holiday,
which is now celebrated in many places around
the world. In today’s lesson students will ind out
about Ireland’s popular symbols and tourist
attractions.
2. On the board write Ireland. In groups of 3-4,
students make a list of all the words they associate
with the country. Set a time limit and elicit the
words onto the board. Then students work
individually and copy the words in the alphabetical
order into their notebook. The irst person to
inish, calls out: Stop! and all students must put
away their pens. Ask him/her to read the complete
list. If his/her alphabetical order is correct, this
person wins the game. If it is not, ask students to
resume their work until the next person calls out:
Stop. Repeat as above.
3. Students read about the Glooms’ visit to Ireland
in Activity 1 and complete the texts about their
favourite places with the corrects names a-f. In
pairs, students compare their answers. Check the
answers with the whole class. Elicit which words
helped students choose the correct names, eg 1.
The Blarney Castle – history, ruined, the top.
Explain any words from the texts students do not
understand.
4. If you have access to the Internet, ask students to
google the names of the attractions from Activity
1 and look at the photos. You can also set this task
for homework. If you have a map of Ireland, you
can show students the location of each of the
attractions mentioned.
extension:
Students choose their favourite place in Poland
and write a paragraph about it, using the texts in
Activity 1 of their worksheets as a model.
