MARTIN PALMER
General Editor; Roots of Religion; Taoism
Martin Palmer is the Director of the International Consultancy on
Religion, Education and Culture (ICOREC). ICOREC specialises in
projects related to religious, environmental and development issues
and works with a variety of international organisations such asThe
WorldWide Fund for Nature (WWF),TheWorld Bank, UNESCO, and
theWorld Council of Churches. He was also instrumental in the
creation of the Alliance of Religions and Conservation first launched
in 1995 by HRH the Prince Philip of which he is now Secretary
General. In 1997 he founded the Sacred Land Project which works
world wide preserving sacred sites from Mongolia to Mexico.
Martin is the author of many books including Travels through
Sacred China, Sacred Britain, Christianity and Ecology, Sacred
Gardens and the forthcoming Jesus Sutras which is a translation of
the sacred texts of the Nestorian Christians, China’s first Christian
community dating from AD 635. He frequently appears on television
and radio, has presented a number of series on sacred topics and
also writes for a wide variety of publications.
Martin studied theology at Cambridge, with a special emphasis
on Chinese and Japanese studies. He founded the Centre for the
Study of Religion and Education in inner city Manchester and has
been a pioneer in the areas of interfaith environmental education.
TARA LEWIS
Shamanism
Having obtained a joint Honours degree in Comparative Religions
and History of Art, and researched a thesis on ‘Shamans in the work
of Siyah Qalam’, after travelling widely in Asia for her studies,Tara
Lewis went on to work for the Alliance of Religions and Conservation
(a UK-based charity). She established ARC Asia, organising and
developing conservation projects with religious communities in
Cambodia,Thailand, Indonesia, Mongolia and China. She is currently
editing Mongolian Sacred Legends of the Land .
JIMMY WEINER
Oceania; Australian Aboriginals
Dr. James F.Weiner received his PhD from Australian National
University in 1984. He has held teaching and research positions in
anthropology at Australian National University, University of
Manchester and University of Adelaide. He has worked for over
three years in Papua New Guinea with the Foi people and has
published two books on New Guinea mythology. Currently he is
working as an independent consultant in native title for Aboriginal
communities throughout Australia. He is also working on a book
about the Hindmarsh Island sacred site case in South Australia.
GRAHAM HARVEY
The Maoris
Graham Harvey is Reader in Religious Studies at King Alfred’s
College,Winchester. He is particularly interested in Maori and
Ojibwe spirituality, but has also published books about
contemporary Paganism and ancient Judaism. His (edited)
Indigenous Religions: a Companion brings together excellent
writing about issues in indigenous religious and their study.
BRENDA RALPH-LEWIS
The Ancient Near East; Zorastrianism
Brenda Ralph Lewis is a freelance author specializing in history,
with particular reference to ancient civilizations. Her most recent
book (out of a total of more than 90), published in 2001, deals with
the philosophy and practice of ritual sacrifice in both ancient and
modern religion. Mrs Lewis has also written over 25TV and video
scripts on the history and culture of ancient civilisations. She is
married with one son and lives in Buckinghamshire.
FREDA RAJOTTE
Native North Americans
Rev Dr Freda Rajotte has always been dedicated to both justice
issues and to preserving the integrity of creation. As a Geography
professor she focused upon the related issues of economic
development and environmental conservation. She also gave
courses in Comparative Religion. Freda has numerous First Nation
colleagues, relatives and friends. Always interested in encouraging
better understanding between people of different cultures and
faiths, for seven years she was the director of the Canadian
Coalition for Ecology, Ethics and Religion. During this time, thanks
to the contributions and assistance of many First Nation leaders,
she compiled and published First Nations Faith and Ecology .
Freda is married and has six children.
ROBERT MORKOT
Ancient Egypt
Robert Morkot is an ancient historian specialising in North-East
Africa. He studied at London University and the Humboldt-
University, Berlin, and currently teaches at Exeter University. As
well as many academic publications he is author of The Penguin
Historical Atlas of Ancient Greece (1996), The Black Pharaohs: Egypt’s
Nubian Rulers (2000) and The Empires of Ancient Egypt (2001).
MICHAEL KERRIGAN
Greece and Rome
An Edinburgh-based freelance writer specializing in the civilizations of
ancient times, Michael Kerrigan has written on almost every aspect
of archaeology, ancient history and culture, covering subjects from
the origins of agriculture to the icons of Byzantium, from the rise of
the Greek city-state to the fall of Rome. A regular contributor to such
journals as the Times Literary Supplement and the Scotsman , his recent
books include Ancient Greece and the Mediterranean (2001), Ancient
Rome and the Roman Empire (2001) and The Instruments of Torture (2001).
KEVIN WARD
African Traditional Religions
Dr KevinWard teaches African Religious Studies in the Department
ofTheology and Religious Studies at the University of Leeds. He
worked for over 20 years in East Africa, as a teacher in Kenya and
as a lecturer at a seminary in Uganda. He is ordained in the Church
of Uganda.
NIGEL CAMPBELL PENNICK
Northern Europe
Nigel Pennick was born in Surrey in 1946.Trained in biology, he
published descriptions of eight new species of marine algae before
moving on to become a writer and illustrator. He is author of over 40
books on European spiritual traditions, arts and landscapes.
MICHAEL SHACKLETON
Shinto
Michael Shackleton studied at Cambridge University, and also
at the University of Manchester from which he received a post-
graduate diploma in Social Anthropology. At present he is
Associate Professor of Social Anthropology at Osaka Gakuin
University in Japan with a special interest in Japanese Religion (in
particular New Religions and traditional mountain cults, or
‘shugendo’). He undertakes research, which has recently taken him
to Southern Ethiopia and Southern Sudan. Michael is also involved
in working with Martin Palmer (General Editor) on the Alliance of
Religions and Conservation (ARC) scheme. He currently lives in
Japan with his wife and two children.
SUSANNA ROSTAS
Central and South America
Susanna Rostas has a D.Phil in Social Anthropology and has
taught at both Goldsmiths’ College and Durham University. She is
currently a Research Associate in the Department of Social
Anthropology in Cambridge. Her publications include The Po p u la r
Use of Popular Religion in Latin America with Andre Droogers.
