BANKING
This course examines the theory of financial intermediation, banking structures and crises, the behaviour of banks in the
context of economic theory, the legal framework, institutional environment and historical development. We focus on the
role of banks in the financial system. In addition, we examine how the regulatory environment affects the stability and
soundness of banking sector, financial markets, and the economy, specifically drawing on current developments. The
teaching objective is to provide a comprehensive introduction to theoretical and applied issues relating to the global banking
industry.

will be available on the course website. Students are required to read the respective chapters from Casu, Girardone,
Molyneux textbook before class and work out the class assignment problems.
Grading policy
Student’s evaluation in the course (30-hour lecture and 15-hour classes) will be determined after three tests. The midterm
will be held on 26 March 2012, the final class test on 7/14 May 2012 and the final examination during May/June session.
Class attendance less than minimum 12 hours out of 15 hours will result in subtracting 5 percentage points from the overall
performance.
