Among the several institutions and many friends who have contributed to the production of this
book, there are two men whose help has been invaluable and to whom go my special thanks. The
first of these is Gary Shaw, BSc, who carried out research on the infantry weapons, the artillery and
the armoured fighting vehicles which are described in these pages. When, in the early summer of
this year, I suffered a short bout of ill health, Gary volunteered his help, and without it the
production of this book might have been seriously delayed. The second friend is the distinguished
American author Mark Yerger, who supplied the m~ority of the photographs which illustrate the
text. Not only did Mark make his extensive archive available to me, but his assistance on a number
of technical points was invaluable. The help he gave is gratefully acknowledged.
I am also grateful to my granddaughter, Victoria, who read and checked the many drafts of
this typescript. Also to Julie Robertshaw and to Colin Bruce, both of the Department of Printed
