Russian Medals
For w argame Campaigns

The following medals were awarded to Russian soldiers during World War Two. Not every medal available
has been listed, due to the difficulty in finding information on Russian Medals.
The medals have been listed by order of importance, from the most important to the least important.
Following the listings is a system for awarding medals to soldiers in a wargame campaign.
Medals for Heroism
Gold Star Hero of the Soviet Union
Established on October 16, 1939. It is presented to an individual or a collective for actions in
service to the state that are considered to be heroic. It is always awarded with the Order of Lenin.
Order of Lenin
Established on April 6, 1930. The Order of Lenin is the highest award given by the USSR for
both military and civilian people and collectives. It is awarded for outstanding services to the
revolutionary movement, labour activity, defense of the Homeland, and strengthening peace
between peoples.
Order of the Red Star
Established April 6, 1930. It was awarded for achievements in the defense of the Homeland
in time of war and peace, the insurance of State security, the promotion of military science
and the development of military equipment, and for valour in battle.
Order of the Patriotic War 1st and 2nd Class
Established May 20, 1942. They were awarded to officers and men of the Soviet
army, navy, and to partisans for personal courage and bravery as well as to
those who contributed to the success of an operation. The 1st Class award is
identical to the 2nd Class award except that it is fully gilded.
Order of the Red Banner
Established August 1, 1924. The order was awarded for bravery and courage in defense of the
Homeland. If the award has been received more than once, the subsequent awards are designated
by the number of the award on a white enamelled background on the bottom of the medal.

Order of Glory 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Class
Established November 8, 1943. The order was awarded to privates, sergeants, and
air force junior lieutenants for feats of valour and courage in the defense of the
Soviet Union. The 1st Class award also had the stipulation that the person be listed
for outstanding performance in specific combat exploits. The 2nd Class and 1st
Class awards are identical to the 3rd Class except that the center medallion is silver gilt on the 2nd Class
award and the 1st Class award is solid gold.
Order of Alexander Nevsky
Established July 29, 1942. This was awarded to military commanders for personal valour
and courage in the Great Patriotic War and insured the successful execution of missions
by the troops under their command.
Order of Bogdan Khmelnitsky 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Class
The 1st and 2nd Class awards were established October 10, 1943 and the
3rd Class award was established January 14, 1944. It was awarded to
officers and men of the army, navy, and partisan leaders and fighters for
skill in combat operations and for courage and patriotism in liberating the
Homeland from the German invaders.
Medal for Combat Service
Established October 17, 1938. The medal was awarded for a person's contribution to the
success of a combat mission and for the enhancement of the combat readiness of the military
units.
Medal for Valour
Established October 17, 1938. The medal was awarded for personal courage and valour in the
defense of the Homeland and the execution of military duty involving a risk to life.
The Aw arding Procedure for W argames
In campaign games, just to add a bit of colour to the game and develop your soldiers further, medals can be
awarded to individual soldiers. This way you will start to get attached to the soldiers as they flesh out, and
maybe, you will think twice about having them make a frontal assault on a bunker system.
To win medals, a number of points have to be gained per battle - the more points the higher the medal that
can be won. Depending on the actions of a character as to how any points he will gain.
Once a battle is over and potential medals have been rolled for, all points gained in the mission are lost.

The following charts are a general guideline: if a character performs an action not listed here, match it up to a
similar action.
Points for Heroism Medals

** Light wound is worth 1 point; serious wound is worth 3 points.

These points are totaled and compare with the value of the various medals. A Character is eligible for any
medal whose value is less than his point total.

To get a medal, the players totals a characters points, and rolls 2d6, adding 1 to the roll for each point the
character has above the required amount. The medal is awarded is the result is higher than the number
required to get the medal. If the character fails to get this medal, perform the procedure again for the next
lowest medal, until he gains a medal or there are no awards left for him to get.

Example: Comrade Boris has come back from a hard mission fighting the enemies of the state. During the
mission, he rescued a commissar while coming under enemy fire (10 points). Having rescued the
Commissar, Boris then ran forward and destroyed an enemy MG bunker with hand grenades (8 points).
When the order is given for withdrawal, Boris provides covering fire, so his boys can safely advance on the
enemy (3 points). All of this was seen by his platoon commander (4 points).
Totaling the points up we have 25 points - Jones could get the Order of the Patriotic War 2nd Class for his
actions. The Order of the Patriotic War 2nd Class is worth 24 points - Boris has 1 point over this amount. It
is impossible for Boris to get anything above the Order of Glory 2 nd Class, so I make rolls to “win” that medal
for Boris. I roll 2d6 - if I get a 12, Boris will get his medal (dice roll + extra points: must be 11 or more). If I fail
to gain that medal, I continue the process with lower grades of medals until Boris either gets a medal or is
forces to go without.
Points for Leadership Medals
A medal for leadership can only be awarded for a battle that was successfully concluded. If you fail to win
the battle, then no medal can be awarded.

To get a medal, the players totals a characters points, and rolls 2d6, adding 1 to the roll for each point the
character has above the required amount. The medal is awarded is the result is higher than the number
required to get the medal. As there is only one Medal for leadership no second roll is made to gain a
leadership medal for the battle in which it would have been won.
