Opening Highlights
Boris Gelfand
Israel's number one grandmaster wins everywhere
nowadays - Bermuda, Biel, you name it. His book My
Most Memorable Games is a big winner as well. For a
taste of his great opening expertise, read this Yearbook!
In Mihail Marin's Suvey (CA 5.6, page 174), Gelfand
analyses his important Catalan game with Harikrishna,
and in our FORUM Boris tells all about his Najdorf
adventures (SI 6.3) against a bunch of youngsters.
Vasily lvanchuk
A member of the chess elite, 'Chuky' is also immensely
popular, and not only in chess-loving Cuba! The leader of
the Ukrainian Olympiad winners is an incredibly versatile
player who finds new ideas over the board in every
opening. Read in Emil Anka's Suvey (OP 8.2, page 214)
how lvanchuk tapped a spectacular new Trompowsky line
to beat theoretical shark Baadur Jobava in 25 moves only.
Pavel Skatchkov
Some Russian guy is playing these weird openings and
winning with them .. . That's what Leon Pliester wrote to
us after a study of that rare bird, The Elephant Gambit
(KP 1. 7, page 138). That 'Russian guy', Pavel Skatchkov,
an International Master from the town of Togliatti and a
creative theoretician, was writing his first article for us at
that very moment. Skip back to page 96 for Skatchkov's
own Survey on a topical line in the Petroff (RG 3.5).
Erwin I'Ami
In the Amsterdam Chess Tournament, one of today's
hopes of Dutch chess became a grandmaster. Despite
his extremely busy summer schedule, I'Ami found the
time to keep a keen eye on theoretical developments
and shares his thoughts on a modern Grinfeld line (GI
3. 7) in a flashy Suvey on page 194. In our FORUM, I'Ami
also speaks out on a very avant-garde gambit in the
Nimzo-lndian (NI 23.9) that Topalov has whipped up.
