Il vero nome di Sting � Gordon Sumner: il futuro leader dei Police nasce il 2 ottobre del 1951 a Wallsend, Inghilterra. Dopo aver militato per circa un decennio nei Police, Sting inizia la propria carriera solista nel 1985, anche se gi� nel 1982 aveva iniziato a dare i primi segni di irrequietezza artistica. In quell'anno aveva infatti partecipato al film "Brimstone and treacle", per il quale aveva realizzato una versione del classico anni '30 "Spread a little happiness", scritta da Vivian Ellis. Era poi arrivata la sua partecipazione all'hit dei Dire Straits "Money For Nothing" e la collaborazione con Phil Collins per l'album NO JACKET REQUIRED. Nel 1985 le cose prendono un assetto pi� stabile, visto che Sting unisce le sue vicende a quelle di quattro importanti jazzisti, Branford Marsalis al sassofono, Kenny Kirkland alle tastiere, Omar Hakim alla batteria e Darryl Jones al basso. Il gruppo incide cos� THE DREAM OF THE BLUE TURTLES, un disco dai chiari influssi jazz che frutta all'ex-cantante dei Police tre hit internazionali come "If you love somebody set them free," "Fortress around your heart" e "Russians". Nel 1985, Michael Apted filma il tour di Sting e delle "Blue turtles", che diventa anche un doppio album dal vivo: entrambi i progetti escono sotto il nome di BRING ON THE NIGHT. Dopo quel tour, Sting registra un nuovo album intitolato NOTHING LIKE THE SUN, che contiene un nuovo hit, "They dance alone," una sorta di tributo del musicista alle vittime della dittatura in Argentina. Nel 1988 Sting prende parte al tour di Amnesty International, Human Rights Now!, e dedica i due anni successivi alla tutela della foresta pluviale amazzonica. Nel 1991 esce il suo terzo album di studio, THE SOUL CAGES, che contiene il nuovo hit "All this time". Il disco � assai autobiografico, esattamente come il successivo TEN SUMMONER'S TALES, che conteneva singoli di grande qualit� come "If I ever lose my faith in you" e "Fields of gold." Dopo un greatest hits pubblicato nel 1994 e intitolato FIELDS OF GOLD, Sting si ripresenta con un nuovo album, MERCURY FALLING, nel marzo del 1996. Dopo un periodo di silenzio esce nel 1999 un nuovo disco di studio intitolato BRAND NEW DAY. Segue un lungo tour di quasi due anni che termina con un concerto in una villa toscana: si tiene nell�infausta giornata dell�11 settembre 2001 e dalle sue registrazioni -nuove versioni di vecchi brani- viene tratto il live ALL THIS TIME. Nel 2003 esce il primo disco di inediti in quattro anni: si intitola SACRED LOVE e vanta un duetto con Mary J. Blige, a cui segue un lungo tour: prima quello regolare (che approda in Italia nel 2004); poi in una nuova versione denominata �Broken music� (che richiama il titolo dell�autobiografia, pubblicata in Italia da Mondadori). Questo tour, che prevede un gruppo di soli quattro elementi sul palco ed un suono pi� essenziale, approda in Italia nel 2006. Quasi in contemporanea con il tour, Sting annuncia anche il suo nuovo progetto: SONGS FROM THE LABYRINTH. un disco di musica per liuto del XVI secolo pubblicato dalla Deutsche Grammophon (etichetta di musica classica del gruppo Universal); in uscita nell'autunno 2006, il disco � dedicato alla musica del compositore rinascimentale inglese John Dowland, molto amato dall�ex Police. Sting porta in tour il disco, tenendo anche un concerto natalizio nella chiesa di Santa Maria delle Grazie a Milano. In una pausa del tour, annuncia ai Grammy Awards che i Police si riformano per il trentennale della loro nascita.
