Steel and Stealth is an OGL rules resource that greatly expands four core
classes: the fighter, monk, ranger and rogue. These are the universal versions of
each class. Each universal class is a framework that lets players choose from a va-
riety of special abilities. You can use these advancements to replicate the standard
core classes (and you can, in fact, run standard characters alongside universal
class characters) or you can develop your own unique combination of abilities.
Think of the rules herein as a midway point between the tightly defined niches of
the standard core classes and generic
“
point buy
”
systems. Great care has been
taken to leave each class with its own, unique niche. A fighter is still devoted to
armed combat in all forms. Rangers are still supreme survivalists, rogues are still
sneaky and monks are still masters of stylized fighting.
These four classes are classic pulp fantasy protagonists: mercenary swordsmen,
sardonic thieves, tough wanderers and exotic adventurers. Steel and Stealth
can be used to build a campaign that focuses on such characters, ensuring that
while every PC cleaves to common thieves, no two are exactly alike.
Before we get to the rules, though, let me answer a question that might be on the
tip of your tongue: Why no paladins or barbarians? Barbarians already have sev-
eral published variants; paladin variants focus on specific beliefs, opening up a
wide range of concepts that might better suit a future book. We might get to them
in the future
—
who knows
?
For now
,
they
’
re well supported elsewhere.
So read ahead and think of how you can make the universal fighter, universal
monk, universal ranger and universal rogue your own.

Fighters have an honorable place as
the first character most fantasy gam-
ers ever play. Experienced players
move on to character types with more
complex abilities, but the fighter re-
mains a favorite
,
“
back to basics
”
op-
tion. Most adventures test characters
with fang, claw and steel, so the
fighter retains a central role. His trade
is at the heart of fantasy gaming.
That
’
s why there are so many inter-
pretations of the class, from sly
swashbucklers to driven manhunters.
distinguish themselves with a special
set of skills. Military specialists often
train other warriors or go on missions
that require their specific talents. For
instance, the army of Danalar only re-
tains a few Wildguard, but these op-
eratives are rarely idle. They divide
their time between teaching soldiers
about orcish tactics and breaking orc
hordes themselves. These assaulter-
fighters hone their Favored Enemy,
Fast Movement and Sneak Attack
abilities.
Where does your character come
from? Where did he learn his unique
selection of abilities? Here are a few
options:
Guilds of Battle: A specific military
academy or guild determines the
fighter
’
s talents. The Bodyguard
’
s
Guild teaches the In Harm
’
s Way abil-
ity and various unarmed combat feats.
The Royal Outriders demand tough
horse warriors, skilled enough with a
bow to use the Ranged Opportunist
and Aim abilities.
Military Specialist: Military spe-
cialists belong to a regular force of
standard fighters and warriors. They
Noble Warrior: Some unusual
fighters are a hereditary elite. Feudal
obligation calls them to the field,
where their specialized fighting meth-
ods turn the tide. The Steelhand
Knights prove their mettle with their
Armed Ki Strike and Armored Bul-
wark abilities. Encased in massive
(and expensive) plate armor
,
they
’
re
capable of beheading demons and
wrestling enemies
’
horses to the
ground.
Self-Made Hero: Let
’
s not forget
the core appeal of the fighter
–
that he
can be anyone! Magic is often an in-
nate gift; priests must find their gods.
Fighters only need a rusty sword and

the will to walk the path of adventure.
These adventurers never studied for-
mal fighting styles or served in an
army. They just took up arms to fight
for what they believed in. They don
’
t
have to follow the
“
rules
”
of combat
,
so
they often develop unique talents.
Tairn Gatharan never learned the eight
parries and three guards used in his
homeland
’
s sword schools. He learned
to fight in the woods and trained in a
farmstead, where he developed the
strength to uproot trees and the power
to drive a spear through plate.
