After his murder at the hands of Set, Osiris usurped Anubis’ position as chief god of the dead. Anubis thereafter took on varied duties related to caring for the Ka, or souls, of the dead in the afterlife – one of which was the swift transport of souls to the Hall of Maat, the Hall of Judgment, where he was responsible for weighing the hearts of the dead.
