GibbsCAM2006v8.0ReleaseNotes
2006 (v8.0), the first release of GibbsCAM 2006. This version of GibbsCAM
introduces several new features as well as multiple bug fixes and changes. The new features are
discussed in the “What’s New in GibbsCAM 2006” document as well as in updated manuals available
as PDF or online help files. This document covers last minute changes and important items for this
release. Languages supported in this release include Chinese (Simplified & Traditional), Czech,
Dutch, English (U.K. & U.S.), French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Portuguese
(Brazilian), Spanish and Swedish.

GENERAL TOPICS
Please remember to periodically check the G ibbsCAM website for updated software and
documentation. When you are ready to install the GibbsCAM software it is a good time to check as
there can sometimes be late changes after software ships.
GibbsCAM 2006 contains both electronic user documentation (PDF files)
and a new online help capability.  Printed manuals are available but are not automatically shipped to
maintenance clients. If you would like a copy of the updated manuals please send in the postcard that
is included with your GibbsCAM 2006 software update.
• The “What’s new in GibbsCAM 2006?” document has a full list of new capabilities in this
release.
• The “GibbsCAM 2006 v8.0 Update List” document has a full list of bug fixes included in this
release. If you reported a bug and received a Tech Support Ticket number please check the list
to see if your item is there.
Those of you who use NLO need a new license file (included with the software) and
an updated NLO server installation in order to run GibbsCAM 2006. This is now delivered on a CD
instead of diskettes. Please refer to the NLO Installation Guide for complete instructions on the
upgrade.
GibbsCAM 2006 introduces a new display and rendering engine based on OpenGL®.
This new system results in increased display quality and customization and supports hardware
acceleration, freeing up processor time and memory. As such, the graphic card in your computer and
the driver for that card become very important. Ensuring that your graphic driver is up-to-date can
often result in better rendering and fix many issues. The Common Reference Guide has an extensive
discussion on OpenGL and the various options you can try both from GibbsCAM and from your
card’s driver. Reading this material will help you optimize your display and trouble shoot any display
issues you may be experiencing. Please note that the traditional, non-OpenGL display is still available
as well as software OpenGL.

Be sure to check out the “Tips and Training” CD which is included in the product
update shipment for videos that demonstrate many of new capabilities in GibbsCAM 2006.
GibbsCAM 2006 requires Windows 2000 SP4, Windows XP SP2 or Windows Server
2003 R1 or later. If you are not running one of these operating systems please upgrade your machine
to one of these systems to use GibbsCAM 2006.
GIBBSCAM FUNCTIONS
The new Feature Drill capability in GC 2006 allows for multiple R levels in a drill cycle. 
When used with existing posts these multi-R level operations will be split into a separate operation for
each R level. The machined results are exactly the same, just the appearance of your posted output
will be different. It is highly recommended that you take a close look at the posted output of your first
feature drill part in this release. If you request it, and your machine supports it, your post can be
upgraded to output multiple R levels within a single drill cycle.
GibbsCAM 2006 introduces a change to the list of default MDDs — the Machine
Type setting in the Document Control dialog. Rather than four sizes each of horizontal and vertical
lathes there are two generic Lathe MDDs, one horizontal, one vertical. Once the orientation is
selected you choose the shank size.
Tombstone Management System
TMS changes in how B axis angles are defined have been made to be compatible with Machine Sim
and GibbsCAM part angles. These changes affect part updates, new Get B logic, and a post change is
required.
Multi-Task Machining
GibbsCAM 2006 requires updated VMMs for MTM parts. If you have MTM you should have already
received the new VMM but if you use an older VMM you will get an error message when you open
the part in GibbsCAM. This error will tell you that you need to contact the Gibbs Post Department to
get an updated VMM. The DLL version number of a VMM needs to be v1.1 or higher to work with
GibbsCAM 2006 v8.0.
MISCELLANEOUS
Custom Plug-Ins:
Any custom plug-ins you may have will need to be copied from the
plugins
folder of the
old installation of GibbsCAM to the
plugins
folder of GibbsCAM 2006 after installation.
If you have use ProAXYZ 5AS you will need to install a new version of 5AS which is
compatible with the GibbsCAM 2006. This must be done after installing GibbsCAM 2006. Refer to the
ProAXYZ Installation Guide for details.
If you have use Renishaw Productivity+ you will need to reinstall Productivity+
after installing GibbsCAM 2006.
