K INK has always been a part of human sexuality, lurking around the
edges but never entirely hidden. Lately, kink has edged its way into the
mainstream—bondage, spankings, and dominance/submissive play
abound in the media. Often, kink is a joke, a topic held up as a “deviant
abnormality” used to titillate the audience. There’s so much more to
kinky play than that; kink can be a means of exploration, a path to our
most secret sexual natures.
For some people—submissives—being tied up frees them to
release their self-control, relax, and be more fully in the moment. For
dominants, being the one to call the shots in a sexual context allows them
to take care of their lover in a deeper way, to give them a different
experience, to free them to fly. Bondage. Domination. Sadism.
Masochism. Playing sexual games with control and submission, with
pain and pleasure, and with restraint and freedom lets lovers loose to
explore new sides of themselves. Consent and the willingness to try new
roles, to play , seriously but fearlessly, are the keys.
The stories in Games in the Dark focus on the headspace of the
individuals involved rather than simply on what they are doing with their
bodies. The roles and costumes and toys are elements of their play, but
the most important focus, what truly makes a scene kinky, is what goes
on inside the heads of the players. Kink is far more of a mental game
than a physical one. Putting on a pair of boots and wielding a whip or a
butt plug is what the observer sees, but the honest and willing exchange
of power that is unseen is what makes kink so exciting.
