Chapter One
“Are you sure you want to do this, Trina?”
Trina Harris closed her second suitcase and placed it on the floor beside her bed
before turning to look at her first cousin and best friend, Devoni Mitchell. Every time
she looked at Voni, Trina was amazed that some discerning man hadn’t married her.
Tall and full-figured, Voni had beautiful, clear honey-bronze skin and an amazing
personality to complement her stunning good looks. Slightly heavier, but no less
gorgeous, Voni reminded Trina of Queen Latifah.
Trina sat on the side of her bed and nodded. “Do you remember how Granny Sadie
Rose always said her grandchildren would one day meet and marry handsome men
when they least expected it?”
Voni smiled. “How could I not? If she said it once, she must have said it a thousand
times.”
“Remember the qualifiers? She said we’d have to be prepared to takes chances and
risks to be happy.”
“She called it a leap of faith.”
“Yes. She said we’d have to take a leap of faith when we were close to our fortieth
birthdays.”
Voni rolled her eyes. “I loved her to pieces, but sometimes I swear her and her
Cajun voodoo predictions doomed us both to be old maids. All her talk about a grand
passion made ordinary men seem like settling.”
Trina shook her head. “It wasn’t voodoo, Voni.”
“Then what was it? How could she possibly know when we’d find true love?”
“I don’t know, but I do know she wasn’t often wrong.”
