WOMEN’S WORK AND WAGES
At a time when women in industrialized countries have a stronger and more permanent
presence in the labor market than ever before, why does a gender pay gap still exist
and why does this gap differ so greatly between countries? Why have the marked
decreases in sex differentials in labor force participation not been accompanied by
corresponding decreases in occupational sex segregation in the labor market? These
are the issues addressed by the studies in this volume.
Contributors to the first part of the collection examine the current state of the economics
of the gender pay gap and the economics of sex segregation. They illustrate how
important insights can be obtained, first through introducing the concept of wage
structure as an analytical tool and second through applying a more explicit general
equilibrium modeling of occupational segregation.
Time allocation has a central role in the economics of gender. A second part is
devoted to the empirical study of gender differences in family responsibilities and
time allocation and to how such differences affect and interact with women’s wages.
In the final part of the book, contributors analyze various aspects of pay structures
and wage mobility. The often neglected issues of gender differences in inter-industry
wage differentials and fringe benefits are treated in depth. The book ends with a
study of the background to the differences in men’s and women’s pay in the Soviet
Union.
Women’s Work and Wages is a timely study of some of the most important issues in
Gender Economics. Its findings illustrate how educational and occupational sex
segregation, as well as family responsibilities, have contributed to the persisting gender
wage gap.
Inga Persson is Professor of Economics at Lund University, Sweden. She holds a
chair in the Economics of Gender and has published on labor market policy,
unemployment, the welfare state and the economic position of women. Her publications
include Generating Equality in the Welfare State: The Swedish Experience (1990).
Christina Jonung is a University Lecturer in the Department of Economics at Lund
University, Sweden. Her research has concerned the economic position of women in
Sweden and gender equality policies.
