butisratheraportrait.And,tospeakmore
carefullystill,itisnotsomuchthis,asmycon-
ceptionofwhataportraitofHawthorneshould
be.ForIcannotwritewiththeauthorityofone
whohadknownhimandhadbeenformallyin-
trustedwiththetaskofdescribinghislife.On
theotherhand,Idonotenteruponthisat-
temptasamereliteraryperformance,buthave
beenassistedinitbyaninwardimpulse,acon-
sciousnessofsympathywiththesubject,which
Imayperhapsconsiderasortofinspiration.
Myguidehasbeenintuition,confirmedandsel-
domconfutedbyresearch.Perhapsitisevena
favoringfactthatIshouldneverhaveseenMr.
Hawthorne;apersonalitysoelusiveashismay
possiblyyielditstraitsmorereadilytoonewho
canneverobtrudeactualintercoursebetween
himselfandthemindheismeditatingupon.

hasavaluedeniedtothereviewsofafter-com-
ers,yetthebestcriticismandbiographyisnot
alwaysthatofcontemporaries.
Ourfirststudieswillhaveabiographicalscope,
becauseacertaingroupingoffactsisessential,
togivepointtotheviewwhichIamendeavoring
topresent;andasHawthorne’searlylifehas
hithertobeenbutlittleexplored,muchofthe
materialusedintheearlierchaptersisnowfor
thefirsttimemadepublic.Thelatterportionof
thecareermaybetreatedmoresketchily,being
alreadybetterknown;thoughpassageswillbe
foundthroughouttheessaywhichhavebeen
