To Marilyn Bender
Whose analysis of Ulysses S. Grant’s eastern campaign was key to
my fifth-grade Civil War project. She gave me my love of books,
and an appreciation for the challenges and lessons of life.
Always looking to expand her own comfort zone, she trekked to
Israel to assist the Israeli Army in her seventies. She could observe
a spartan display of military barracks life at San Juan Capistrano
and remark, “Maybe they wanted it that way.”
This project was conceived beside the pool of her California
complex.
