ABANA 2k GATE PROJECT
This is the third in a series of features about the ABANA 2000 Gate Project. The first installment was
in the July ‘98 issue, and the second installment was in the September ‘98 issue. The Blacksmith’s
Journal’s coverage of this project is a voluntary effort, and all the proceeds from the sale of the gate at
the conference go to ABANA
Many of the details of the design presented in the September issue are shown this month, including
details of the “postless” hinge system. However, these drawings can’t be finished until a scale model is
fabricated and resulting changes made. The full-scale gate will actually be an enlarged copy of this model
without some of its hand forged features. For example, forging the tops of the back bars from stock 1/8
actual size will be easy to do on the model, but impractical to do on the full-size version. The full-size
result will be a reflection of an actual hand-forged element without necessarily being one. Other ele-
ments, such as the slot-punched 7/8” round bars emerging from the back bars, will be hand forged at full
scale. Additional features include FAAC swing gate operators located below a driveway plate mounted
to a reinforced concrete base. (The hinge system is self supporting and actually needs no foundation
until permanent installation is made). An adjustable system of gate stops acting on the back bar elimi-
nates the need for a stop in the middle of the driveway. A drop bar latch mechanism is included to allow
manual locking when the gate operators are not in use. Following are plans and design details.
