Chapter One
Lowell stood on the front lawn of the house he‟d just purchased, feeling a sense
of dread. He wanted his cramped studio apartment back. He had no business
owning a house in the suburbs, let alone a two-story two-bedroom with vinyl siding
and a little white fence around the yard. Park a tricycle on the front lawn, and he
was confronting his worst fears.
His friend and Realtor, Joanie, strolled out of the house then, all grins. At
Lowell‟s insistence, she had taken him on a brief tour of the house again after the
closing that afternoon. He wished he could share in her enthusiasm, but he‟d just
parted with a lot of money to own this little corner of the suburban nightmare.
He looked at the houses on either side of his. The one to the left was basically
identical to his house but had yellow vinyl siding instead of the vaguely bluish
white of Lowell‟s house. There was a bike sitting on the lawn of that house, a small
one with a pink frame and tassels on the handles. The house to the right had
pinkish siding and was immaculately maintained. It looked like a house straight
out of Stepford, with a neatly manicured lawn, and a shiny sedan parked in the
driveway.
There was something eerily familiar about the whole block too, which Lowell
found puzzling since so much of this town looked the same. Each block was basically
identical, cookie-cutter houses with lawns and kids and minivans. It also all looked
the same as it had when he‟d left sixteen years before.
“You know anything about my neighbors?” Lowell asked Joanie when she
reached him.
“Sure,” she said. She pointed to the house on the right. “That‟s the Emerson
house. They‟ve only been in town for a few years. I don‟t know them well at all, but
rumor has it Tad Emerson is trying to get his house in one of those home and
garden magazines.” She turned and pointed to the house on the right. “That‟s the
Midland house. Jason Midland‟s parents owned it, but they died a few years ago,
and Jase lives there now.”
“Oh. That‟s terrible about his parents.” Jesus God, of course he would move in
next to Jason fucking Midland. He looked at Joanie to see if she remembered Jase
had been the object of many of Lowell‟s high school fantasies, but she seemed
oblivious. “I didn‟t realize Jase stayed in town,” he said, sounding impressively calm
in his own estimation.
