How to Create downloadable maps with GPS TrackMaker (GPSTM), WDGPS and MMO .

Screen captures using Jascap – search for jascap in google.

This is not a tutorial on GPSTM, refer to the excellent Help in the GPSTM and the website for how to use GPSTM..

I am assuming that a scanned map image is in GPSTM and calibrated.

Create a track of the outline you want mapped (in this case the shoreline)

Save your work frequently.

Edit the track to be a Principal Road and pick a color that will stand out.

All tracks of the same style will be in the same layer of the finished map.

In this example, I picked Principal Road for the shoreline, and Arterial Road for the rocks. This will enable the rocks to appear at a different zoom level.

I have also inserted some buoys and rocks.

The file “BBSC Buoys WGS84.dbx” can be imported into GPSTM and extra tracks added for experimentation. Obviously the scanned background image will not be present.

Save your new map and use it as input to WDGPS.

After the tracks are done, you must create a Tracklog around the whole map, rename it to "Example" and apply the "Yellow Map Background" style. Press the "Send to Back" button to send the Tracklog behind the other Tracklogs. The "Yellow Map Background" style will inform Mapdekode the limits of the map.

The blue line down the side is the outline.

Save the map, then save it again as MapDekode Text File.

Now start WDGPS, select conversions, Mapdekode to Mapinfo

and select the file locations, select the complete button and Go.

The map is now ready for import into MMO. Start MMO, open the Background Map box, Create new, name it, set the scale and click the Add Layers button. Look in the correct directory, and change the Files of Type to Mapinfo.

Select the Principal Highway and click open.

Change the legend to Black by double clicking on the line and selecting the black.

Next, click the Create Map button, and the map will be created, save it and close the create map box then close the Background Maps box and MMO will draw the single layer map.

Set the scale so the map is not full screen , and enclose this in a region, by clicking the square icon and drag a box around your map. Clicking again outside the box will turn it green.

This map can now be uploaded to the GPS

This will result in a single layer map. Load it on the GPS and have a look

Repeat the exercise to add layers

In MMO you will need to open the map - and add new layers by importing other .mif files.
