Preface
God endgame t;hniq ue is esen­
tial for any player who wishs to
attain the he i ghts of chss mas t ery .
It is only omparatively rarely that
gams are won in the middleg a me
and then only as a result of serious
mistakes on the part of the
opponent. ln a signiicantly
geater nu m ber of cases it is the
endgame which proves to be the
sene of a ierce strugle to realze
a small advantage built up in the
course of the opening and m i ddl e ­
game. The endgame ets the task
of converting this into a d;isive
advantage or, for the defene, the
task of rendering it inadquate.
The strongest mstes of the
past-Philidor. Steinitz, Chigorin,
asker, Rubinstein, Capablanca,
Al e khi n e .. -were all outs t an d ing
experts on the endgame.
The appraisal of a pos i tion is
one of the basic elements of any
chess game, d etermin in g as it des
th e strategy and the tactics to be
adopted . But how often , even with
strong players, the imortant
mome n t oftransition from middle­
game to endgame pro,·es to be a
stumbling blck! W h et her queens
should e exchanged or whe t her
a sol u t i o n should e sought n
complications, whether a one
pawn advantage is suicie n t to
win in the rook e nd i ng that lies
ahead-these a re problems which

game, but which it is diicult for
any player who does not have an
adequate command o f endgam e
technique to solve. The attitude,
therefore, of certain high e r - graded
players that •if it oms to an
ending. home analysis wil see me

to say the least.

on the oard. Studying endgames
acquaints the b eg i nn e r with t he
seciic p r ope r t i es of the p ices
and pawns and with the way they
i n te r ac t . The s tudy of endings
ought , therefore, to prede the
analysis of opening s and ompli­
cated middlegame positions. Stat­
istics culld from numerous tour­
naments reveal that rook endings
comprise 0 per ent of aU
e ndg a ms , and it is for this reason
that a study of them is of great
practical value.
