DESIGN PHILOSOPHY
Richard Belson knew what he was talking about when he wrote,
“Downhill racers are a unique combination of athlete, Zen master,
and mental patient; and if there is one thing we’ve learned about
Zen masters over the years, it’s that they’re really picky about bike
specs.”
One of our main goals this year was to improve rider positioning on
our DH/Extreme Freeride bikes by lowering the fork length, lowering
the standover height, and shortening the head tube.
We’ve chosen to keep our true 4-bar linkage “Horst link” design, as
it is still the best rear suspension system for isolating both the pedal-
ling and braking forces to create that ‘bottomless’ feel whether you
are soaking up stutter-bumps or airing a big drop.
Norco’s 2006 VPS Team DH, A-Line, and Atomik were all designed
with one thought in mind – speed. Our Factory Team riders have
tested these bikes on everything from the Red Bull Rampage to
the World Cup DH circuit, so we’re confident they can handle some
serious abuse.

As quoted by Bike Magazine in their July 2005 issue, “The axle path
is the key to a good suspension design, the “Horst link design”
creates a near vertical rear wheel axle path which all but eliminates
suspension feedback and offers a smooth ride. The Horst link 4-bar
linkage is still the design standard to judge suspension performance
by.”
This year’s line is a fine balance between strength and weight.
We’ve carefully chosen a parts package designed to be the best
DH/Extreme Freeride bikes for your money, whether you are a
serious Shore rider, a bike park enthusiast, or a Zen master.
We have also made a few design changes specifically for our
smaller riders, such as the shorter 50mm reach Marzocchi clamp
on stem (mediums have the 62mm) and a slightly lighter spring
weight.
Finally, we’ve lightened up all the bikes in this category by removing
excess material from the head tubes, chainstay yokes, tubing, and
dropouts.
