BMW 740 Rear Ball Joint Replacement
This procedure was developed by a non-mechanic working on his own 2000 740i Sport.

Tools you’ll need:
Special BMW Tools:
A – Rear Ball Joint Puller Set: BMW# 90 88 6 334 190 (Includes …191, 192, 193, 194)
B – Ball Joint Spindle Set: BMW# 90 88 6 333 333
Standard Tools:
C – Pipe to use as breaker bar
D – Torque Wrench capable of 236 Nm (175 ft-lb) torque
E – Paper or thin board to use as shim
F – Felt marker
G – Impact wrench (nice, but not required)
H – Hammer
J – Grease (any type will do)
R – Adjustable end wrench
L – 17mm Socket (for tires)
T – Assorted screwdrivers (for pushing out bolt)
M – 18mm Socket
U – Small awl and/or screwdrivers (c-clip removal)
N – 24mm Socket
– Jack
P – Socket Extender
– Jack stands
K – 16mm Socket
S – Ratchet

Procedure:
1. Chock the front tires and lift the rear end of the car onto jackstands. (Put your jack under
the differential housing so that the two lift pads are available for the stands.)
2. Remove the tires and place them under the car, so that if you manage to knock it off the
jackstands you won’t get crushed.
3. Use a felt tip pen to mark the eccentric bolt and swing arm so that the car will be mostly
aligned when you reassemble things:

4. Unbolt the brake caliper from the wheel carrier and place it on top of the wheel carrier to
prevent the brake hose from getting pulled on. This step also makes room for the swing arm
in a future step:

5. Climb under the car and take a look at the suspension to get yourself acquainted:

6. Using your 24mm socket, ratchet, and larger breaker bar, remove the nut from the end of
the eccentric bolt. You’ll probably have to use another wrench to hold the eccentric bolt to
prevent it from turning. Once the nut is removed, use your 18mm socket, ratchet, and
breaker bar to loosen – but do not remove – the bolt as shown. This bolt keeps the integral
link in place while you remove the eccentric bolt:
