Preface
Almost every day the media report on the latest advances and break-
throughs in stem cell biology and regenerative medicine. These stories
usually focus on either the short-term expectations for therapy or on
the ethical issues posed by the new technologies. Within the scientific
community, interest in stem cells has been increasing rapidly because
the study of stem cells is generating new insights into the fundamental
